CLUB LIKES TO GIVE HAM RADIO DEMOS

The Iowa Wireless Club was asked by the Nevada Iowa...
4H group to come up and give a talk about ham radio Saturday September 12th, 2009...
Joe WØIW along with Karl KDØHFQ the president of the club, along with Nathan the vice president of the club, and also the Media director of the club Brian KØSXY to take pictures etc..
Nathan Showing Zach how to call cq during the contest...
Joe WØIW had a better idea instead of giving a somewhat boring talk to a bunch of 12/13/14/15 year olds for a hour or two. Joe brought up the clubs TS-2000 & the Icom 756 pro and enough coax & wire to put up two 20 meter dipoles, and have the kids build the dipoles and teach them about Ham Radio thru a practical demonstration like a field day.
Well it was huge success. We heard tell that our meeting was the highlight so far of the year and a few kids are even wanting to get their ham licenses it looks like from our practical ham radio demo..
Nathan hooking up a ground to show the kids what exactly goes into setting up a station.

Several Pictures of Karl & Nathan Showing the
kids the ropes in contesting...
The IWC had a blast teaching these youngsters about ham radio & contesting...

So why do we need the Iowa Wireless Contesting & DX
Club
Why does Des Moines, Iowa need another club, or another organization for Ham radio operators? That's a great question and to answers that here's the run down. The DMRAA & the ARTS club work very well for what they were created for. The DMRAA or WØAK club repeater 146.940- pll 114.8 usually helps to coordinate the local Hamfests, and is the oldest and most established club in central Iowa. The DMRAA, was born as far back as anyone can remember a ham radio club in Des Moines has ever existed. The DMRAA does public service events monthly, as well as promotes the VEC program, and they hold monthly organized meetings down at the science center of Iowa.
So what about the ARTS club, well they are on 147.075+ pll 114.8 so what do they do to fit in? Well the ARTS picks up the slack the DMRAA might let go, and the ARTS club provides & maintains a highly successful repeater linked system connecting almost all of central Iowa to the national weather service. These repeater systems save lives, and allow us all to enjoy a brilliantly connected system of repeaters all over Iowa so we can keep in touch, and have fun, and hold necessary ARES meeting on both club repeaters Sunday nights at 8pm, and when the need arises they are the backbone of our ARES & SKYWARN systems here in Iowa with the National weather service.
Holy cow what's left after those two clubs pretty much have cleaned up ? Well besides Field day which both clubs come together, and participate in every year the IOWA WIRELESS CLUB...IWC wants to compete in formal world wide DX and Amateur radio contesting from here in central Iowa. No body locally has really created a wide open contesting club to teach central Iowa hams the fun of contesting. Oh sure there's some big guns West of Des Moines, and a few individuals all around the city who contest, and have little clubs going. However there is no highly advertised contesting club to be found except in other parts of the state. So out of necessities breed invention. Besides Contesting & DXing the IWC wants to hold monthly meetings on Antenna building to help grow the club station, and hold monthly kit building sessions to teach new hams the art of electronics and kits. Also the IWC wants to hold monthly VEC testing sessions which will help grow the ham population around this area. So now you have it, the real reasons another kind of club might be born. So the IWC wants to provide another outlet for hams here in central Iowa to come together and just have fun
